Hello, my name is Isabella Pedraja. After being diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis my only choice was to have a Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Auto Transplant (TPIAT). My surgery lasted over 14 hours with the removal of my pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, and appendix. Although my recovery was difficult, my team of doctors in Miami along with the Pancreas Care Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital made the journey memorable. We created many slogans to define our experiences such as “Mustache Monday,” “The Martians are here,” “Harry Potter Day,” and “Taco Tuesday” just to name a few. We were able to bring laughter and smiles to everyone faces while going through this difficult journey together. But most important the joy they experienced in our interaction was given forward to other patients that day. I believe laughter and joy is an important part of healing and my team of doctors always took part in my antics. Four months after surgery, I was back in the water swimming and competing. My quick recovery is a result of the amazing care received by my team of doctors. Now along with swimming, I’ve taken up a new sport, pole vaulting.
Even though there are times when I’m not feeling well, I continue to push forward knowing others are struggling with the same issues. Although my life has changed, my gift of giving remains the same.
I am being honored with a Courage Award on Saturday, April 15th by the National Pancreas Foundation at their inaugural Courage for a Cure Gala at the Cincinnati Music Hall. Please help me find a cure by donating to NPF!
